Barrie, Ontario sits on Kempenfelt Bay, an arm of Lake Simcoe, about 97 km and 60-85 minutes up Highway 400 from Toronto Pearson. A business sedan from Pearson is a planning $380-440, and a ride within Barrie is $110-125, all-in plus HST. First-time visitors can see the waterfront and downtown in a day; book a chauffeur direct by the trip or by the hour.
Barrie, Ontario: where it is and why people visit
Barrie is a lakeside city in Simcoe County, on Kempenfelt Bay, the western arm of Lake Simcoe. It sits roughly 90 km north of the top end of Toronto, and Highway 400 is the spine that connects it to the airport, to Toronto and to cottage country. People come for the waterfront in summer, the ski hills and snow in winter, family visits, college and hospital business, the hockey, and as a base for Muskoka, Georgian Bay and Collingwood.
If you only have one fact to hold on to, make it this: Barrie is the northern gateway. Everything north and west of the Greater Toronto Area funnels through it, which makes it a very convenient base and, on holiday weekends, a very busy road. This guide is written for the first visit, with fares and drive times so you can plan before you land.
Getting to Barrie from Toronto Pearson
Most visitors arrive at Toronto Pearson, in Mississauga. Barrie is about 97 km from the airport and the drive takes 60-85 minutes depending on the hour. A business sedan is a planning $380-440 one way, all-in plus HST; the reservation engine fixes the exact fare before you confirm. Terminals 1 and 3 are in use, so check your booking for the right terminal.
Our fare includes tolls on the planned route, flight tracking, and curbside pickup at the commercial pickup area. Meet and greet inside arrivals with a name board is an optional add-on on the booking form. Included waiting is 30 minutes for Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes for other international arrivals, from actual landing. The Barrie to Pearson route page has the detail, and the Toronto Pearson airport page covers the terminals.
Other ways in: Billy Bishop, Union Station and Lake Simcoe Regional Airport
Billy Bishop (YTZ) is on the Toronto Island, about 115 km and 80-110 minutes from Barrie, a planning $445-510 by business sedan. Union Station in downtown Toronto is about 114 km and 75-105 minutes, a planning $420-485. If you arrive by VIA Rail or GO Transit at Union, the car can meet you at the exit.
Lake Simcoe Regional Airport (YLK) is about 18 km from downtown Barrie, a drive of 20-25 minutes and a planning $160-185. It is a general-aviation airport with no scheduled airline service, so it matters mainly for private flights; see the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport guide and check the airport's own site for what it offers.
GO Transit and other public options
GO Transit's Barrie line runs between Allandale Waterfront GO, on the Barrie waterfront, and Barrie South GO to Union Station, also calling at Bradford. For schedules and fares use the GO Transit site, and check it for the day you travel; we do not print times here because they change.
There is no direct train from Barrie to Pearson. The honest comparison is covered in our guide to Barrie to Pearson by GO train, shuttle or limo. In short, public transit is the lower-cost choice for one traveller with light luggage and a flexible schedule, and a private car earns its price with luggage, children, early flights or late arrivals.
Getting around Barrie itself
Barrie has a municipal transit service, and the City of Barrie site is the place for routes and fares. For visitors with luggage, a tight schedule or a day of several stops, a chauffeur is simpler. A ride within Barrie is $110-125 for a business sedan, up to 10 km and 5-20 minutes.
The better value for a visiting day is often the hourly chauffeur: one car and one professional chauffeur for a 3-hour minimum, $135-160 an hour for a business sedan. A four-hour sedan booking is $540-640 all-in plus HST. It means you park nowhere, wait for nothing and move between the waterfront, the downtown and a restaurant without arranging each ride. See hourly chauffeur service in Barrie.
Visitors who would rather not drive at all can read how a Barrie limo service works, from a single ride across town to a car kept for the day.
The waterfront and Centennial Beach
The waterfront is the reason many first-time visitors come. The Tourism Barrie site describes a waterfront trail of 6.7 km, and the shoreline holds Centennial Beach, the Spirit Catcher sculpture and Heritage Park, all within easy reach of downtown. In summer it is a place to walk, swim, rent a bike and watch the boats; in other seasons it is quieter and the views across Kempenfelt Bay are still the point.
Cars stop where parking rules allow, and a chauffeur waits while you walk. Our attractions page for the waterfront and Centennial Beach covers where drivers drop off.
Downtown Barrie: Dunlop Street, galleries and the market
Downtown Barrie is compact and walkable, with Dunlop Street as its main street. The MacLaren Art Centre is the regional public art gallery for Barrie and Simcoe County and sits on Mulcaster Street; when we checked its site it showed pay-what-you-can admission and hours that vary by weekday, so check before you go. The Five Points Theatre is a live-performance venue downtown.
The Barrie Farmers' Market is a regular Saturday-morning market; check the City of Barrie site for the current indoor and outdoor arrangements. Tourism Barrie describes more than 300 restaurants and plenty of local shops in and around the downtown, so first-time visitors will not struggle to find a meal.
Things to do in Barrie by season
Summer is the waterfront, beaches, patios, golf and festivals. Autumn brings colour in the surrounding countryside; our blog on a chauffeured fall colours drive from Barrie suggests routes. Winter is the snowbelt: ski hills close by, the hockey season at the arena, and lake-effect squalls that can make Highway 400 slow with little warning. Spring is the season of runoff and potholes, and a quiet time to see the waterfront.
Barrie is in Ontario's snowbelt, so plan winter arrivals with extra time and a vehicle suited to snow. Our Highway 400 winter travel guide explains what drivers watch for, and Ontario 511 shows road conditions.

Festivals and events a first-time visitor might catch
Kempenfest is the large waterfront arts and crafts festival; its own site describes nearly 300 juried artisans, an antique village, live music and a midway, and it runs over the August civic-holiday weekend. See Kempenfest for the current year's dates, and our Kempenfest page for how the day works with a car.
The Barrie Colts play OHL hockey at Sadlon Arena through the winter; the OHL site lists the schedule, and our Sadlon Arena page covers drop-off. Tourism Barrie lists more than 50 festivals and events a year, so check the Barrie events calendar and the official sites for dates before you plan.
Shopping and restaurants
Barrie's main shopping areas include Georgian Mall and Park Place in the south end; our page on Georgian Mall and Park Place covers them. Tanger Outlets Cookstown is the outlet centre to the south, close to Highway 400. Downtown has independent shops and restaurants, and the waterfront has patios in summer.
For a shopping day with several bags, an hourly chauffeur lets you drop purchases in the car between stores. A business SUV is $175-205 an hour and carries five passengers and five bags; an executive SUV is $225-265 an hour for six. Alcohol is not allowed on board, so if you are visiting a brewery or restaurant, the chauffeur takes you home afterwards.

Day trips from Barrie: distances, times and fares

For a day of several stops, hourly beats one-way: you keep the car and the chauffeur, and the driving home is not yours.
Ski hills, resorts and the north
Snow Valley in Springwater, Horseshoe Resort and Hardwood Ski and Bike in Oro-Medonte, Mount St. Louis Moonstone at Coldwater and Blue Mountain near Collingwood make the Barrie area a winter-sports base. See Snow Valley Ski Resort, Horseshoe Resort and Blue Mountain Village. We drive to these places as a ride only; we have no affiliation with the resorts.
North on Highway 11, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville are the heart of Muskoka. The Muskoka attractions page and Discover Muskoka site are the starting points.
Casino Rama, Georgian Bay and heritage stops
Casino Rama Resort is east of Orillia, about 47 km and 35-45 minutes from downtown Barrie, a planning $230-265 by sedan; our Casino Rama page explains the run. Check the resort's site for current offers.
Georgian Bay history is at Midland and Penetanguishene, where Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour are the historic sites; see our pages on Sainte-Marie and Discovery Harbour. Check their sites for seasons and hours.
Where to stay
Visitors stay in Barrie's own hotels, in the resorts of Horseshoe Valley, at Friday Harbour in Innisfil, in Collingwood and Blue Mountain, and in Muskoka. See our pages on Barrie hotels, Horseshoe Valley and Oro-Medonte resorts and Friday Harbour and Innisfil.
The travel desk, with BookingWorldwide.net, searches flights, hotels, resorts and packages, and the car can be added to the same plan. Concierges and planners can also book direct for guests.
Business visitors: hospital, college, base and plant
Many first visits to Barrie are not leisure. Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), Georgian College, CFB Borden and the Honda plant at Alliston bring visitors who need to be on time. A day of meetings across the city is a natural fit for the hourly chauffeur, and our corporate car service page covers accounts and invoicing. Medical visitors can see medical appointments and hospital visits.
Accessibility, children and pets
A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available: book in advance and tell us about the wheelchair or scooter, so the right vehicle is sent. Child seats start at $25 each and are added when you book. Pets need prior approval: ask at booking and wait for written confirmation; service animals are welcome and should be mentioned at booking.
A first-time visitor's one-day plan
A simple day: land at Pearson, ride to Barrie in 60-85 minutes, check in, then take an hourly chauffeur for four hours to see the waterfront, downtown and a restaurant. The next morning, a day trip to Orillia, Wasaga Beach or Horseshoe Valley is an easy half day, or a longer day to Collingwood and Blue Mountain.
If you have two days, add a Muskoka run to Gravenhurst, 70 km and 45-55 minutes away. For a longer view, see the Barrie cities and towns we serve page.
