Detroit to Barrie, Ontario: a long drive done properly
Five hours in a car is a serious journey, so the way it is organised matters more than on any short transfer. The trip starts in metropolitan Detroit, at the airport in Romulus, at a downtown hotel or at a home in the suburbs. It crosses the Detroit River into Windsor, then follows Highway 401 east for most of the day through southwestern Ontario, before the route turns north onto Highway 400 for the final stretch to Barrie. Along the way there are only two real decisions: which crossing to use and where to stop.
Planning figures: about 470 km, 4.75 to 5.75 hours plus the border, $1,490–1,715 one way by business sedan. You can book Detroit to Barrie directly; the reservation engine prices the exact address and shows a fixed fare before you confirm.

Which crossing: Ambassador Bridge, tunnel or the Gordie Howe Bridge?
Detroit now has three vehicle crossings into Windsor. The Ambassador Bridge is the long-established link, and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel runs under the river downtown. The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to traffic in July 2026 and connects the Interstate 75 corridor in Detroit with Highway 401 in Ontario, which makes it a natural fit for a trip that heads straight down the 401.
Which one is best depends on where you start and the queue on the day. The chauffeur makes the call using live wait times and your pickup address, and the choice does not change the fare. Because the new bridge is recent, conditions and procedures there may still be settling, so the chauffeur will decide on the day from live conditions.
Border documents for the Detroit crossing
Everyone in the car needs acceptable travel documents. For most United States citizens that is a valid passport; permanent residents of the United States carry a permanent resident card as well as their passport; visitors of other nationalities should check whether they need a visa. Because rules differ and change, read the Canada Border Services Agency and the Government of Canada's travel information for your own passport.
Children travelling with only one parent or with other adults should carry a signed consent letter. A NEXUS-holding chauffeur is available for border trips on request; see the NEXUS page for who qualifies. For the return to the United States, the CBP document guidance sets out what U.S. authorities expect.
Crossing times and border waits
Detroit crossings can be quick or slow, and the difference is rarely predictable from the calendar alone. Long weekends, events in downtown Detroit and trade traffic all play a part. The CBSA publishes official border wait times for each land crossing, and your chauffeur watches them from the time the trip is confirmed.
Because the fare is fixed, a slow crossing costs you time, not money. If you have a hard deadline, such as a wedding at 4:00 pm in Barrie, plan to arrive in Barrie the evening before, or ask dispatch to plan a start that leaves a generous cushion.
The road: Highway 401 and the final stretch on 400
From Windsor, Highway 401 is the spine of the trip, a high-capacity road through southwestern Ontario that passes London, Woodstock, Kitchener-Waterloo and Milton before the Toronto area. The chauffeur can then switch to the 407 ETR across the top of Toronto to Highway 400 or stay on the 401, depending on the clock. From the 400, Barrie is a straight run north.
Tolls are included in your fare, whichever the chauffeur uses. The toll highway often saves meaningful time in the late afternoon and rarely matters at night. Trust the chauffeur's choice and let the fixed fare absorb the difference.
Breaks, long days and a second chauffeur
A long trip is safer and more pleasant with planned stops. A comfort break around the middle of the drive is normal, and a longer stop for a meal is reasonable on the way. Tell dispatch at booking if anyone in the party needs more frequent stops, such as a young child or a passenger with medical needs.
On very long days we can arrange a second chauffeur, and overnight trips can be arranged with the chauffeur staying over. Both are set up at booking, not on the day, so raise them early. If your plan has the car waiting in Barrie for a day or two before a return to Detroit, discuss it with a coordinator so the chauffeur's rest is built in properly.
Fly instead? Detroit Metro to Toronto Pearson, then a car to Barrie
For many travellers the honest answer is not to drive at all. Airlines connect Detroit with Toronto, and a car from Toronto Pearson to Barrie costs far less than the through-drive: the planning range is $380–440 by business sedan for about 97 km and 60 to 85 minutes, against $1,490–1,715 for 470 km from Detroit. Check current flight schedules and fares with the airlines.
The flight-and-car route makes the most sense for one or two travellers who do not need a car in Detroit. The through-drive earns its price for groups, travellers with heavy luggage, people uncomfortable with flying and anyone with a Detroit pickup that has no airport in it. Our Pearson airport page explains the Barrie end.
Detroit Metro airport, Windsor to Barrie and downtown pickups
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is in Romulus, west of downtown; see the airport's own information. Windsor International Airport (YQG) is on the Canadian side, and its official site lists the services it operates. A DTW pickup is priced from its exact address by the reservation engine, with the Detroit planning range as your guide.
Flight tracking applies to airport pickups. If your plane is late, the chauffeur's start moves with it, and your confirmation states the included waiting time. For a downtown Detroit hotel, give the hotel name and street address, and the chauffeur will confirm the pickup point by message beforehand.
Using the car by the hour once you reach Barrie
A Detroit arrival rarely ends at the first door. The chauffeur who drove you might be needed for a funeral, a family dinner, a day of site visits around Alliston and CFB Borden, or a wedding weekend. It is far more efficient to keep the same car and chauffeur by the hour once you arrive.
The hourly chauffeur service has a three-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks. A business sedan is $135–160 an hour all-in plus HST, so a four-hour booking is about $540–640. If the plan includes several stops, the private chauffeur page explains how the day works.
Who books Detroit to Barrie
The riders are family and business. Michigan relatives travel to weddings, graduations and funerals in Barrie. Cottage owners with places in Muskoka want a chauffeured arrival that carries on north without a change. Students at Georgian College and their parents come from across the border. Business visitors have appointments in Barrie, Alliston or at CFB Borden. Occasionally a group, such as a sports team or a wedding party, needs a Sprinter for up to fourteen.
If your destination is further north than Barrie, the engine quotes the through-trip from your Detroit pickup, so there is no need to change vehicles. Read about cottage country car service for the northbound options.
Families, child seats, pets and accessibility
A five-hour trip with children needs real planning. Child seats are available on request from $25 each; add them at booking with the ages. Choose the vehicle by bags as well as seats, and be honest about the luggage count. Pets need prior approval: request it at booking and wait for written confirmation; service animals are welcome and should be mentioned.
A wheelchair-accessible vehicle can be booked in advance; tell us about the wheelchair or scooter. Alcohol is not allowed on board in any vehicle, which is worth remembering if the trip is for a celebration.
Winter driving on 401 and 400
Winter changes this trip more than most. Lake-effect snow can hit the southwestern Ontario corridor, and squalls off Georgian Bay can slow Highway 400 near Barrie between November and March. A trip that starts dry in Detroit can end in a squall at the other end of the day. The chauffeur drives a late-model vehicle on winter tires from November to April and will tell you honestly if a departure should be moved.
Before you leave for the return trip, check Ontario 511 for road conditions and read our Highway 400 winter travel guide.
Cancellations, delays and changes
Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so a late plane moves the start time, not the fare. Cancellations follow the sitewide rule, measured from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours before, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10 per cent; 48 hours or less, 50 per cent; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100 per cent.
For a trip this long, the rule is applied as written, because the chauffeur's day is committed from the start. If your date is uncertain, tell dispatch as soon as you can; moving a booking is easier than rebuilding one.
