Muskoka Steamships sail from the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst, about 70 km and 45–55 minutes from Barrie on Highway 400 and Highway 11. Public options are limited, so most visitors drive; a chauffeur suits families and mixed-ability groups. A Muskoka limo from Barrie is $310–355 one way for a business sedan, all-in plus HST.
What are the Muskoka Steamships, and what do you actually board?
Muskoka Steamships is the cruise operation of Real Muskoka, a non-profit charity that preserves and celebrates Muskoka's heritage, and its ships sail from Gravenhurst. Its own pages describe three vessels. The RMS Segwun was built in 1887 and is described as North America's oldest operating hand-fired steamship; it carries 97 passengers plus crew and is about 125 feet long. The Wenonah II, completed in 2002, is a modern vessel styled after a 1907 Muskoka steamer, carries 216 passengers and has air conditioning and an elevator. The Wanda III, built in 1915, is a historic steam yacht that is being restored and is docked at the Muskoka Discovery Centre.
Which ship you sail on depends on the cruise you book, so check the Muskoka Steamships site for the current schedule and tickets. We do not print cruise times or prices, because they change by season.
What does a car from Barrie to Gravenhurst cost?
Gravenhurst is about 70 km from downtown Barrie. These are planning ranges one way, all-in plus HST: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, tolls on the planned route and gratuity. The reservation engine prices your exact address and shows one fixed fare before you confirm.
| Vehicle | Passengers / bags | Barrie ↔ Gravenhurst (one way) | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business sedan | 3 / 3 | $310–355 | about 70 km | 45–55 min |
| Business SUV | 5 / 5 | $405–460 | about 70 km | 45–55 min |
| Luxury minivan | 6 / 6 | $465–535 | about 70 km | 45–55 min |
| Executive SUV | 6 / 6 | $495–570 | about 70 km | 45–55 min |
| First-class sedan | 3 / 3 | $805–925 | about 70 km | 45–55 min |
| Sprinter | up to 14 | $1,240–1,420 | about 70 km | 50–65 min |
The fare is per vehicle, so a family of five or a birthday party of ten shares it. Our Muskoka car service page covers the wider area.
What is the route from Barrie, and how long is the drive?
From downtown Barrie, head up Highway 400, then take Highway 11 at its junction just north of the city, past Orillia to Gravenhurst. The planning figure is 45–55 minutes in ordinary conditions. The road is mostly four lanes and quick on a quiet weekday, but it is the cottage road, and from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving northbound traffic builds on Friday afternoons and southbound on Sunday afternoons, worst on long weekends.
Barrie is in Ontario's snowbelt, so on a winter day check Ontario 511 before you leave. A weekday summer cruise is the easy version of this trip, and a Saturday in July is the busy one.
How early should you arrive for a cruise?
Real Muskoka's schedule page asks passengers to arrive at the dock 45 minutes before the cruise departure to check in and receive boarding passes. That is its rule, and it is worth treating as a minimum; a first-time visitor with children, a walker or a picnic will want a few more minutes.
Here is how a Barrie morning looks for an 11:00 a.m. departure, as an illustration:
- 8:45 a.m. Chauffeur at your Barrie door.
- 9:40 a.m. At the Muskoka Wharf, which Real Muskoka lists at 185 Cherokee Lane in Gravenhurst, with time to walk down and look around.
- 10:15 a.m. Check in, 45 minutes before departure.
- 11:00 a.m. Cruise departs.
Work backwards from your actual boarding time, and tell dispatch whether you want to arrive at the minimum or with a relaxed margin.
Which ship suits which passenger?
Accessibility varies by vessel, and Real Muskoka's pages are the authority. Its schedule page describes the Wenonah II as fully wheelchair accessible, the RMS Segwun as partially accessible and the Wanda III as not accessible. If anyone in your party uses a wheelchair or a walker, ask the ticket office before you book which cruise and ship suit you.
On our side, a wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available for the drive if you book in advance and tell us about the wheelchair or scooter. We do not claim any vessel or dock specification, and we would rather you checked than assumed.

Is the Muskoka Discovery Centre worth a stop?
For many visitors it makes the day. Real Muskoka also runs the Muskoka Discovery Centre at 275 Steamship Bay Road in Gravenhurst, with exhibits and hands-on experiences about Muskoka's heritage, and the Wanda III is docked there. It lists private events, programs and a KidZone for children. Opening hours and admission change, so check the Real Muskoka site for your date.
If you are bringing children or grandparents, the Centre is a good before-or-after anchor for a cruise day, especially if the weather turns. The chauffeur can leave you at the door and return when you are ready.
What else fits into a Gravenhurst day?
The town is compact. Parks Canada runs the Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site at 235 John Street North, celebrating Dr. Norman Bethune. According to its Parks Canada page, the site was open Thursday to Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from September 1 to October 31 in 2026, with fees and youth admission set out on the page, so check the season that applies on your date.
Add the wharf, a lakeside lunch and a stroll through the town, and you have a full day without a long list. For a wider Muskoka day, Muskoka Tourism lists Gravenhurst and its neighbours, and our post on the Muskoka cottage-country day trip links the towns together.
Should you book two one-way trips or an hourly chauffeur?
For a day built around one cruise, two one-way trips are usually better value: a drop-off at the wharf and a pickup after your last stop, with the chauffeur free in between. Ordinary pickups include 15 minutes of waiting, then 15-minute blocks, so choose a realistic return time and message us if the day runs late.
An hourly chauffeur is the better tool when you are linking several stops, such as Gravenhurst, a lunch in Bracebridge and a lookout on the way home. Planning figures, all-in plus HST: business sedan $135–160 an hour with a 3-hour minimum, business SUV $175–205, executive SUV $225–265. A four-hour sedan booking is $540–640.
What does a whole Gravenhurst day look like by the clock?
A sample for a family of five with a noon cruise, not a promise. A business SUV collects you in Barrie at 9:30 a.m. and reaches the Muskoka Wharf at about 10:30. You have time to look at the water, visit the Discovery Centre and check in 45 minutes before departure. The cruise leaves at noon. Afterwards, lunch in town, an hour at the Bethune Memorial House if your day is in its open season, and the drive home by 4:30 to miss the Sunday crowd if it is a weekend.
On a weekday the roads are kinder and you can stay longer. Say at booking how long you want at each stop, and ask dispatch to propose a pickup time that works for the youngest and the oldest in the party.
Why do many visitors prefer a drop-off to parking at the wharf?
Because a summer weekend on a lakeside waterfront is not the moment to hunt for a parking space with a stroller and a grandparent. Parking arrangements are the operator's and the town's, and they change, so check Real Muskoka's page for your date. A drop-off at the dock, a pickup at the same place and no parking ticket is the simplest version of the day, and it means that whoever would have been the driver can enjoy the cruise.
It also lets you leave when you like. A tired child or a change of weather does not mean searching for the car.
Is a coffee stop in Orillia worth building in?
Highway 11 passes Orillia on the way to Gravenhurst, which makes it a natural place for a comfort stop and a coffee, about 38 km and 30–35 minutes from downtown Barrie. If the cruise is in the afternoon, you can stretch the morning into a walk by Lake Couchiching. Our Orillia day-trip post lists what is worth the stop. A chauffeur can pause for any reason, so say so at booking and the plan can include it.
What about birthdays, anniversaries and groups?
Real Muskoka's site says it handles weddings, private events and groups of 20 or more through its sales team, so for a private charter go to them. For the ride, a group of up to fourteen travels in a Sprinter, and multi-vehicle bookings are priced in writing by a coordinator.
Anniversaries and milestone birthdays work well here, because the cruise is a ready-made occasion and the drive up is a pleasant start. Tell us if it is a celebration; we cannot add alcohol, which is not allowed in our vehicles, but flowers, gifts and a picnic that you supply can ride in the car. Check the ship's own rules for food and drink.
Is it a good outing for children and grandparents?
It is one of the easiest multi-generation days in Simcoe County and Muskoka. The drive is under an hour and the day has little walking in it, but check the ship, the dock and the Centre for access before you commit older relatives to the plan. Child seats (infant, child, toddler or booster) are available from $25 each, added at booking, and strollers fit in the boot of an SUV or van.
Tell us at booking how many bags and seats you need so the vehicle fits. A business SUV takes five passengers and five bags; an executive SUV or luxury minivan takes six with six bags.
When does the cruise season run?
Real Muskoka's pages say that the Segwun has a 145-day sailing season and that 2026 cruise reservations were open. The season runs through the warm months and into autumn, with start and end dates that vary with the weather, so check the schedule before you plan.
A late-season sail can be combined with the autumn colours; see our fall colours post for how to plan one. Always confirm that the cruise you want is running on your date.

What if it rains or the cruise changes?
Check the operator's own policy for weather and cancellations, since it is the operator who decides whether a boat sails. For our side, cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours before is free, 72 hours or less costs 10 %, 48 hours or less 50 %, and 24 hours or less or a no-show 100 %. If a cruise is cancelled on the day, tell dispatch at once and we will look for a sensible alternative with you, such as the Discovery Centre or a drive to Bracebridge.
How do you book a car to the Gravenhurst wharf?
Booking is direct on BarrieLimo.net, with no app and no aggregator commission. Open the reservation engine, enter your Barrie address and the Muskoka Wharf, choose the date, time, passengers and bags, and read the fixed fare. Add the return as a second trip once you know your boarding and finish times. Pets need prior approval, requested at booking and confirmed in writing; service animals are welcome. For Muskoka lodges and hotels alongside the cruise, our travel desk arranges them on one plan.
