Porter Airlines Billy Bishop flights suit Barrie travellers who want a compact downtown airport, but the drive is about 115 km and 80–110 minutes, and the airport is closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Porter also flies from Pearson, so check which airport your booking says. Our Barrie to Billy Bishop airport limo page has the fares.
Is Porter Airlines Billy Bishop the right choice from Barrie?
Sometimes. The airport's own site describes service to more than 20 cities in Canada and the United States, and Porter is its largest airline, with Air Canada also operating from it. The attraction is a small terminal close to downtown Toronto. The cost is the road: about 115 km from downtown Barrie, 80–110 minutes, which is further than Pearson at about 97 km and 60–85 minutes.
If your fare is on Porter, the first question is not "is the island airport better?" but "which airport does my booking name?" Porter flies from both, and getting that wrong is the most expensive mistake in this post.
Which airport does your Porter booking mean?
Porter operates from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and from Toronto Pearson (YYZ), and its announcements this year add routes at both. Look at the three-letter code on your confirmation, not at the word "Toronto". YTZ is the island airport at the foot of Bathurst Street; YYZ is the big airport in Mississauga, with its own terminals and a different pickup.
Check the code the night before, and again in the morning. If your booking changes, because the airline moves a flight or you rebook, check it again. Put the airport and flight number in your car booking, and never rely on memory.
How far is Billy Bishop from Barrie, and what does the drive look like?
It is about 115 km from downtown Barrie, normally 80–110 minutes. The route is south on Highway 400, across to the 401 and then down to the waterfront on the Gardiner, a different corridor from the Pearson run with its own congestion. Pre-dawn and quiet weekends are close to 80 minutes; weekday rush hours and snow push toward 110.
Cars pick up and set down at the mainland terminal on Eireann Quay, at the foot of Bathurst Street. From there you reach the airport by the pedestrian tunnel or by the short ferry, both of which the airport's site lists. Our route page explains where the car stops and how the last few hundred metres work.
What does a Porter flight out of Billy Bishop mean for pickup timing?
Porter publishes its own check-in and baggage cut-off times on its site, and they differ between domestic, US and other international flights, so read the page for your flight rather than trusting a rule of thumb. Add the walk through the tunnel or the ferry, which a driver cannot shorten, and the drive of 80–110 minutes.
The airport's hours matter more here than at Pearson: it is open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with check-in opening at 5:30 a.m., according to the airport. A 6 a.m. departure is possible, but you cannot arrive at 3 a.m. and wait in the terminal as you could at a larger airport.
What changed with US preclearance at Billy Bishop?
On March 10, 2026, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance facility opened at Billy Bishop. The airport says that all passengers flying to the United States go through preclearance: you clear U.S. customs, immigration and agriculture inspection in Toronto before departure, and arrive in the United States as a domestic passenger. The airport's preclearance page lists four steps: airline check-in, Canadian security, U.S. preclearance inspection and the transborder lounge before boarding.
For a Barrie traveller the lesson is to treat a U.S. flight from the island like any international departure: a valid passport, ESTA approval if you are a citizen of a Visa Waiver Program country, and extra time. Preclearance is "similar to any international customs process and can take time," the airport says.
Which U.S. and Canadian routes does Porter fly from Billy Bishop?
The list moves, and Porter's own site is the place to check. Porter's announcements this year describe U.S. service from Billy Bishop to cities including Boston, Chicago, Newark and Washington, D.C., with Nashville added from May 2026 and Chicago moving from Midway to O'Hare from September 1, 2026, and service to Montreal's Metropolitan Airport added from June 2026.
We name them to show the shape of the network, not to promise a schedule: if you read a route here and it has changed, the airline's page wins. Use the booking you hold as the only authority for your own trip.

How do you get from the car to the terminal?
The car stops at the mainland terminal on Eireann Quay, at the foot of Bathurst Street. The pedestrian tunnel to the island has moving walkways and lifts, and the airport's shuttle page describes the airport's shuttle service to downtown. A short ferry crosses to the island as the alternative. The airport lists each option on its site, with current details.
Pack as you would for any walk: wheeled cases are easy through the tunnel, a pram is fine, and a heavy bag is easier than it looks. The chauffeur helps with luggage at the car; from there you are in the airport's hands. Tell us about mobility needs at booking, and book a wheelchair-accessible vehicle in advance if you need one.
How much is a car from Barrie to Billy Bishop?

Is it cheaper to take the GO train to Union and then the airport shuttle?
It can be, for a solo traveller with one bag and a flexible morning. The GO train runs from Barrie's Allandale Waterfront and Barrie South stations to Union Station; from there the airport operates a shuttle, described on its own site. Check GO Transit for today's timetable: we do not print schedules, fares or journey times.
It is a different proposition for a family or anyone with several bags, an early flight or a US departure with preclearance, where you want to arrive calm and unhurried. A car is door to door and carries the luggage. Our GO train versus limo guide compares the options for the Pearson run, and the logic is the same here.
What about getting home from Billy Bishop at night?
Because the airport closes at 11 p.m., your last arrival is bounded in a way that a Pearson arrival is not. Check your arrival time against the airport's hours, and book the car from the mainland terminal on Eireann Quay with the flight number so tracking is on.
Included waiting counts from actual landing: 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights, 60 minutes on other international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks. You then walk through the tunnel or take the ferry to the mainland, so allow time for it and message the chauffeur when you are on your way. The pickup is at the mainland terminal on Eireann Quay, and the booking confirmation shows the details.
When does an hourly chauffeur beat a one-way fare to the island?
When your trip is not a straight run. A morning of meetings in Toronto and an evening Porter flight from the island, a business lunch before an afternoon departure or a family day downtown before a late flight all suit the hourly chauffeur service: one car and one chauffeur held for as long as you need, from $135–160 an hour for a business sedan, plus HST, with a 3-hour minimum.
A four-hour sedan booking is $540–640 all-in plus HST, and the car waits while you work. Our Barrie to downtown Toronto page covers the city day, and the rates page lists every vehicle's hourly figure.
How should a Barrie family plan a Porter trip from the island?
Plan from the flight backwards, and add the tunnel. Check Porter's check-in cut-off, the airport's hours and the preclearance step if you are flying to the United States. Add the walk, the drive of 80–110 minutes and a margin for the 400, particularly from November to March, when snowbelt squalls can slow the road with little warning.
Choose a vehicle by bags, not by people: a business SUV carries five passengers and five bags, and a luxury minivan or executive SUV six and six. Add child seats at booking from $25 each. Our family airport guide goes through the logistics.
What does the snow change on the way to the island?
The same things it changes on the way to Pearson, plus one. Snowbelt squalls off Georgian Bay can slow or close Highway 400 between Barrie and Highway 89 with little warning, and downtown Toronto can have its own problems on the Gardiner. The extra thing is the island itself: winter conditions can affect the airport's operations, and airlines make their own decisions, so check your flight before leaving.
Bring your pickup forward by 30 to 45 minutes on a squall day and tell dispatch you would like to. Check Ontario 511 for the road. Our winter airport transfers post explains the planning.
What if you are returning to Pearson or Billy Bishop for a connection?
A Porter itinerary can use both airports across a single trip: out of the island, back into Pearson, or the reverse. Book each leg as its own car booking, with the airport, flight number and terminal on it, so tracking follows the right aircraft. The fare for each leg is shown by the engine before you confirm.
Look carefully at the return code. A chauffeur waiting at the wrong airport is a very bad start to a trip home, and a thirty-second check at booking prevents it.
How do you book a Billy Bishop car direct?
Use the reservation engine: pickup, destination, date, time and vehicle, with the airport name, flight number and any special needs in the notes. Read the fixed fare and confirm. There is no app and no aggregator commission, and one dispatch desk handles your trip. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup.
