Opening the cottage from Barrie means a loaded car north on Highway 400 and 11, usually on the Victoria Day weekend, and the same run back in October at Thanksgiving. A business sedan to Gravenhurst is a $310–355 planning range one way, about 70 km. We arrange these as cottage weekend car service from Barrie, by the trip or by the hour.
What does opening the cottage involve, and where does the car fit?
Opening a cottage is a list: water on, power checked, beds made, dock in, boat in, fridge stocked, the first fire. The car's job is the part before the list. It carries the people and the soft cargo (bags, bedding, groceries, a cooler, the dog) safely to the door, so that the person who usually drives is fresh for the work.
Plenty of families drive two vehicles, one for people and one for stuff, and end up paying for a second parking space and a second tank of gas. A chauffeur changes the arithmetic. This guide covers what to plan for in May and in October, with fares, timing and the honest limits of what a car can carry.
When do people open and close, and what does the calendar do to the road?
The traditional dates are the Victoria Day weekend for opening and the Thanksgiving weekend for closing. In 2026 Thanksgiving Monday is October 12, so the closing weekend is October 10 to 12. The next Victoria Day is Monday, May 24, 2027, making the opening weekend May 21 to 24.
Both are long weekends, which means the busiest traffic of the year: northbound from midday Friday, southbound on the Monday afternoon. Some owners open earlier, in April, when the ice has gone, and some close later, so the dates are guidance, not law. If your dates are flexible, a Thursday departure or a Tuesday return is a different road altogether.
What can a car carry, and what should travel another way?
A business sedan takes three people with three bags, a business SUV five and five, an executive SUV or luxury minivan six and six, and a Sprinter up to fourteen. Groceries and coolers count against the luggage space, so tell dispatch what you are bringing.
What a car should not carry is equipment: dock sections, a generator, a pump, a chainsaw, anything that belongs in a truck or trailer. If something unusual is on the list, tell dispatch before the day, not at the door. A sensible split is people, food and bedding with us, and the heavy gear with a supplier or a caretaker who has the right vehicle.
Which vehicle and what fare for which town?
These are one-way planning figures from downtown Barrie, all-in plus HST with tolls and gratuity included. The reservation engine prices your exact cottage address, which matters on lake roads.
| Destination | Distance | Drive time | Business sedan | Business SUV | Executive SUV |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gravenhurst | about 70 km | 45–55 min | $310–355 | $405–460 | $495–570 |
| Bracebridge | about 90 km | 60–70 min | $370–425 | $480–555 | $590–680 |
| Port Carling | about 110 km | 75–90 min | $430–495 | $560–645 | $690–790 |
| Huntsville | about 130 km | 80–95 min | $490–565 | $635–735 | $785–905 |
Our Barrie to Muskoka route page carries the same bands with the Sprinter. Pearson to Barrie, for owners who fly in, is $380–440 for a sedan over about 97 km.
Should you book one-way fares or an hourly chauffeur for the weekend?
For a whole weekend, two one-way fares (a drop on Friday and a pickup on Sunday or Monday) are almost always better value than keeping a chauffeur on the clock, because you do not pay for the hours in between. Dispatch can compare the two for you.
Hourly makes sense for a short opening visit, where the car waits while you unload, check the water and drive back the same day, or for a day with several stops such as the grocery store, the dock supplier and the cottage. Rates are $135–160 per hour for a sedan, $175–205 for a business SUV and $225–265 for an executive SUV, with a three-hour minimum. Overnight stays with the chauffeur are arranged at booking.
What does a sample opening Friday look like?
A family of five with a dog, leaving Barrie on the Friday of Victoria Day weekend for a cottage near Bracebridge. They book a business SUV, with pet approval confirmed in writing.
- 10:00 Pickup in Barrie with bags, bedding and a cooler already packed. The chauffeur loads and checks the count.
- 10:15 A grocery stop on the way out of the city, added at booking, 15 minutes.
- 10:45 Highway 400 north to Highway 11, ahead of the afternoon queue.
- 12:15 Arrive at the lane. The chauffeur stops where the lane is safe and tells you if the last stretch is too soft.
- 12:30 Unload together. The car leaves; the weekend starts.
The return is a separate fare on Monday, set for a time that avoids the southbound crush.
What does a sample closing Sunday with a flight look like?
A couple closing the cottage on Thanksgiving weekend who fly out of Pearson on Tuesday. They want the cottage left tidy and the airport run done in one go. They book a pickup at the cottage on Monday afternoon, a drop at home in Barrie, and a second booking at 5 am on Tuesday for Pearson, 97 km and 60–85 minutes.
A chauffeur makes the closing day calmer, because nobody has to drive after a day of draining pipes and carrying cushions. Tell dispatch the flight time so that the pickup is planned back from it. Our airport page for Pearson covers the terminal end.
What should you do about the cottage water?
Ask your plumber; this is general guidance, not a substitute. What we can point to is the health unit. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit offers free drinking water testing, through Public Health Ontario laboratories, for people on a private source such as a well, cistern or treated lake water. It tests bacteria only, and sample bottles are picked up from offices that include Barrie, Collingwood, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Midland and Orillia.
Samples must reach a drop-off within 48 hours of collection, drop-offs are Monday to Thursday before 4:30 pm, and Fridays are not accepted. That makes a Friday-to-Monday opening awkward, and a Thursday trip or a bottle collected on the way north worth planning. Read the health unit's page for the current rules.
What are the rules for the first campfire?
Ontario's fire season runs from April 1 to October 31, and the province says fires should be lit no sooner than two hours before sunset and put out no later than two hours after sunrise. The province also tells people to check their municipal fire department for bylaws and permit requirements, and to check its interactive fire map before burning.
That is the official guidance, and it matters at both ends of the cottage year, because opening weekend sits at the start of the season and closing weekend near its end. Read the Ontario fire page before you light anything; if there is a municipal ban, it applies. The Federation of Ontario Cottagers' Associations publishes resources for waterfront owners too.
How do docks and boats affect the transfer?
They do not travel in the car, but they affect the plan. A dock crew or a marina may need access on a specific day, so the weekend's timetable is often set by their availability, not yours. Tell the chauffeur if a crew will be waiting, and agree the arrival time with them.
If the dock is not in, the last stretch to the water may be a walk with the bags, not a drive. If you plan to launch a boat, the car's job ends at the cottage steps. A weekend like that is well served by a one-way drop and a one-way pickup, with a Sprinter or an executive SUV if guests are coming.
How do you avoid the long-weekend traffic?
From Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, cottage traffic is heaviest northbound on Friday afternoons and southbound on Sunday afternoons, and long weekends are worse. The two simple moves are to leave before noon on Friday or after 7 pm, and to come home on Monday morning or late.
If you must travel at peak, tell dispatch, because the planned pickup may need to move earlier than you expect. The fare does not change with the traffic, but the time it takes does. Our Barrie to Muskoka guide for travellers without a car covers the timing in more detail.

What changes at the October closing?
Daylight is short, mornings are cold, and the first snow can arrive. A road that was easy in May may be soft with leaves, wet or frosty in October. The closing drive often ends in the dark, which is a good reason to have a chauffeur at the wheel after a long day of work.
Highway 11 and Highway 400 north of Barrie sit in the snowbelt, so a squall can slow the trip with little warning from November onward. Check Ontario 511 before you leave. If the lane is unploughed or icy, a business SUV with four-wheel drive is the sensible choice. Our fall colours drive guide has more on autumn timing.
Who else rides along: guests, helpers and caretakers?
Opening weekends bring helpers: an adult child, a neighbour, a friend with a truck. A Sprinter carries up to fourteen for a crew and the weekend's first party. Property managers who open several cottages can ask about our corporate accounts desk for invoicing.
A caretaker who meets the car at the cottage is helpful, because included waiting on a pickup that is not an airport or station is only 15 minutes, then 15-minute blocks. Give the chauffeur the caretaker's name and the gate or lock arrangement in the booking notes.
Can the dog come, and can you celebrate in the car?
Pets need prior approval: request it at booking and wait for written confirmation before you travel. Service animals are welcome and should be mentioned at booking. Child seats are available from $25 each, added at booking.
Alcohol is not allowed in our vehicles, including on a closing-weekend run. The first drink of the season belongs on the dock, not in the back seat. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available if you book in advance and tell us about the wheelchair or scooter.
How do you book an opening or closing run direct?
Open the reservation engine, enter the Barrie pickup and the full cottage address, choose the date and vehicle, add child seats and read the fixed fare. Book early for long weekends: Victoria Day and Thanksgiving fill first.
Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours before is free; 72 hours or less is 10 per cent; 48 hours or less is 50 per cent; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100 per cent. If your season starts with flights or hotel nights, our travel desk can arrange them with the car.
